Bellinzona has been in Hepburn Springs since the turn of the century. It has reflected the era and trends of the region throughout this time. Hepburn Springs was first settled in the 1840’s and was originally known as Wombat Hill, the present name of the state forest, which can be viewed from the dining room balcony at Bellinzona.
In 1851, built on the site of Bellinzona was a small butcher’s shop. During this time, gold was discovered in small quantities in the bed of the creek behind this site.
In the early part of the gold era, the twin towns of Hepburn Springs and Daylesford had a combined population of 20,000. Hepburn was home to the second largest Victorian Chinese
settlement. Approximately 5,000 Chinese lived in Hepburn and owned market gardens in the area now known as Lake Daylesford. There were also many residents that came from Ticino region on the border of Switzerland and Italy. Guest houses, such as Locarno and Bellinzona took their names from the cities in this region.
Bellinzona was built in 1903 and was a prominent guest house in the area. In January 1906, Bellinzona was tragically destroyed in a fire which swept through Hepburn. It was later rebuilt and was to remain an icon of the area.
By the 1920’s, tourism had become the region’s main industry thanks to the discovery of its mineral springs.
The Grange Group purchased Bellinzona in 1995 and continued to develop the property until tragically once again in November 2003; fire ravaged this iconic historical building.
Determined to rebuild, the group undertook an extensive rebuilding program in 2004 with a view to restoring the architectural beauty of Bellinzona to its former glory, but with all the modern amenities and technology put in place to ensure guests enjoy a comfortable stay.
Today Bellinzona reflects a proud history stretching over 100 years.
